The Stone Gallows

This is Taunton’s original execution site from 1575 to 1810 as shown on the plaque attached to the stone. Many men where executed here by the orders of the well known “Hanging Judge Jeffries. Just across from this site is a road named after him called Jeffries Way.

It is said that an underground tunnel leads from the Taunton Museum in the centre of Taunton leads to the Gallows here. The Taunton Museum was the location where Jeffries would pass sentence on many. See Plaque Below.
